Abstract

The first time I saw him, I thought he was not your typical Mexican. He answered unceremoniously the questions at our first meeting, where we covered topics such as how to grade the academic papers of Tec de Monterrey students doing research for the ProMéxico office, the organization of the Ministry of Economy that fosters foreign investment in and trade with Mexico from its offices in Shanghai, China. The meeting lasted a couple of hours. We agreed on the due dates and content of the papers and that was it. We said good-bye, after thanking our hosts and appreciating the delicious Chiapas coffee we had been served. It was a good experience and an opportunity for him to find out what a Mexican with a solid framework in international business and with several years of experience working with Asia had to say, especially since Alejandro Javier Salas Montelongo was a young man acting as trade advisor for ProMéxico in Shanghai.
