Fudan University was established in 1905 by the renowned modern educator Ma Xiangbo. As one of the first participants in the 211 and 985 Projects, Fudan has developed into a comprehensive and research-oriented university, with Departments of Philosophy, Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, Science, Engineering, Medicine, and Management. In 2020, it ranked 40th in QS World University Rankings.

  

There are 35 schools and independent departments with 79 bachelor’s degree programs, 43 master’s and 37 doctoral degree programs of Level I academic disciplines, 32 master’s and 4 doctoral professional degree programs, and 35 post-doctoral programs. Fudan hosts around 300 research institutes including 5 national key labs, 5 national investigation centers and bases, 47 ministerial or provincial key labs and engineering centers, and 10 Key Bases of Arts and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education.
