Founded in 1842, the University of Chile is the main and oldest institution of higher education of the country, with a national and public character. The university seeks to solve national and regional issues and to contribute to the development of Chile. 20 Chilean Presidents have been students at the University of Chile. Also, the two Chileans who received the Nobel Prize, Gabriela Mistral (1945) and Pablo Neruda (1971), both in Literature, were members of the University.
